4 Website Address Tips

When it comes to picking the right Domain name for your business, it can be a minefield to decide “what domain should I register?”

Here are 4 quick web address tips that’ll save you domain regret down the track.

  1. Matchy Matchy | When selecting your business name, ensure the exact match domain is available. This has several benefits, from a legal standpoint, there’s no denying this domain belongs to you.

You’ll also be advertising your business name each time you send an email vs an obscure domain that’s not clear as to who you are.
  2. Avoid Hyphens | Trust me on this one! As you may have noticed, our domain has a hyphen and sure, it perfectly matches our registered trading name…However (and THIS is why I compel you to avoid them) once you’ve said “Web hyphen s t a.com.au” and “no, not an underscore, a dash” for close to 17 years, you’ll wish you’d heard this advice on day number one.
  3. Register the .com.au and the .au direct domains | While only fairly new, Australian websites will start to drop the .com so you want to be ready. It’s also to protect your brand. Otherwise, there’s nothing stopping another business or even just some random stranger from registering the .au version of your domain. They can then do whatever they want with it. They don’t even need to be a real business.
  4. Check The Spelling | Physically write out your proposed domain name in full and look for any weird spellings or even rude or offensive words. Want to know what I mean…
